Last week I got an invite to join a fitness class by Ben Zorn. I did not know who he was but the invite mentioned that he was a celebrity trainer. His website mentions that he is a personal trainer, nutrition coach and a life coach. The class was a total body strength class based on tabatas; mostly pushups, planks, burpees, crunches, jumping jacks and a few other routines based on working with our body weight. We trained on an outdoor turf, and it was very cold, but I still managed to sweat. And that is usually a sign of a good workout for me.
At the end of the class he was surrounded by many students who started asking him to pictures with them. That is when it hit me that when the invite mentioned he was a celebrity trainer, he not only trains celebrities, but is also a celebrity himself. A Google search showed that he participated in the reality TV show ‘The Bachelorette’ recently. It was an ‘aha’ moment.
We have all heard at some point in time what a great actor Robert De Niro is, I haven’t seen many of movies (including The Godfather or the Raging Bull) to understand why. The last movie I have seen of his was The Silver Linings Playbook, and I don’t remember him for his role in that one. Recently I saw the movie The Intern, and now I understand all that hype. I absolutely loved him in the movie. He emotes exceptionally well his eyes, and his conversations in this movie are a delight to watch. Go see the movie if you haven’t already. Makes you realize what good acting can do to a cliched story line.
We went on a 10 mile hike to Purisima Creek Redwoods Preserve this Saturday. Fortunately for us the rain stopped right before we started our hike, and the trail was full of picturesque spots. It was probably a beginner to intermediate level hike with a few patches of slopes and peaks and a fair bit of flat pathways. It took us ~5 hours to finish our hike, and that was enough time to have long conversations and to take multiple short breaks. Before our last mile of the hike, we stopped near a small ridge overlooking the half moon bay beach and had our lunch. The view was terrific and so was the food we shared.
Some pictures from our hike
I stopped taking the scores on Rotten Tomatoes seriously, especially after shows like Arrow, Flash have > 96% freshness rating but I still visit the site regularly to catch up on movies/shows. Also I never saw a series or a move get an absolute score on either end of the spectrum. At least not until a few days ago.
First it was the show ‘Master of None’. It is 100% fresh on this site. I did not hear about it before, but the rating got me curious, and I had Greeshma tell me it was very good. Add to that it was a Netflix presentation. So I watched it and was not disappointed at all. Aziz Ansari was super funny, and adding to that the writing and the supporting cast was pretty hilarious as well.
Fast forward a few days later, I saw the trailer for a new Adam Sandler movie releasing directly on Netflix – ‘The Ridiculous Six’. Sure Adam Sandler did not star in any hit movies lately, but I enjoyed watching his movies ’50 First Dates’ and ‘Click’ and since this was a Netlfix presentation I thought this might be a good outing for him. So on the day of the release in the evening I check this movies vibe on Rotten Tomatoes, and damn! This movie gets an absolute 0% rating. While I could not brave myself to watch the movie, reading a few comments from the critics made me think the movie should have been named ‘The ridonculous six’, you know for the extra emphasis on the ridiculousness.
Plata O Plomo… does that ring any bells? It means Silver or Lead. I first heard this quote in a show that I watched a few days ago. I am not giving you any context for the quote, but I am going to tell you something… this is easily the finest show made since Breaking Bad in the crime drama genre. Shows like these are what make binge watching TV or in this case Netflix worth it. And I am confident Wagner Moura is going to win an Emmy next year because of his role in this masterpiece.
